It was a sad day for residents of Gurjiya village in the Daura Local Government Area of Katsina State are currently counting their losses, following an early morning fire incident which destroyed some farmlands and livestock.
Valuables said to have been lost in the Monday incident included 10 silos, five cows, 25 goats, 30 chickens and part of a building.
The Officer-in-Charge of the state Fire Service Sub-unit in the local council, Malam Abdulmuminu Shu’aibu, said the timely intervention of the fire service prevented the inferno from spreading to other properties.
According to him, the fire was first noticed around 8.47 in the morning, prompting residents to raise the alarm and sought the intervention of the fire service in the council.
Shu’aibu said it took about six hours to put out the fire, adding that the cause of the incident had yet to be ascertained.
He implored residents of the village against careless handling of fire and inflammable substances.
The Executive Secretary, Katsina State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Aminu Waziri, said the agency would continue to sensitise people to the need to be careful with fire especially during the harmattan.
