Senegal set to launch world’s largest museum of black civilization

Senegal is set to open the world’s largest museum of black civilizations in its capital city of Dakar on Dec 6, 2018. Built by China, the €35m ‘Musee des civilisations noires’ will display 18,000 works over 14,000 sq. metres, from prehistoric tools to contemporary paintings.

Meanwhile, ahead of the launch of the museum, Senegal has requested the return of all items in French museums’ collections that are identified as originating from the country. Abdou Latif, Coulibaly, Senegal’s culture minister, said the country are ready to find solutions with France “But if 10,000 pieces are identified in the collections, we are asking for all 10,000”.
