Why FG Proscribed Shiite Group – Presidency

Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on media and publicity, Garba Shehu has given an explanation as to the proscription of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), also known as Shiites.

According to Mr. Garba, the ban has nothing to do with other peaceful and law-abiding Shiites in the country from practicing their religion.

In a statement in Abuja on Sunday, the presidency said they had to proscribe the group to put an end to wanton violence, murder and willful destruction of public and private property.

When Buhari Has Finished Killing Us, He Will Move To Christians – Shiite Group

On Friday, Justice Nkeonye Maha of the Federal High Court in Abuja, proscribed the group, banning their activities across the Federation. The proscription followed the bloody clash the Islamic group members had with the police on Monday, July 22nd in Abuja. The clash led to the death of a youth Corper serving with Channels TV, Precious Owolabi, a deputy police commissioner, Umar Bebel and 10 others.

Reacting to the ruling, the secretary to the academic forum of the movement, Abdullahi Musa, said the Federal government cannot stop the group from practising its religion.

The lawyer described the court order as “highly discriminatory and unconstitutional, as was the case of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB.”

This was contained in a statement made available reporters in Abuja on Saturday in a reaction to the ruling of an Abuja Federal High Court which described the group on Friday as a terrorist organisation. According to him, “what group could be more terrorist than the herdsmen and their known anchor, Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association that has held Nigeria down by the jugular for years, killing, maiming, burning, raping, turning Nigeria into a crimson field of bloodbath?”

Femi Falana, a human rights activist and lawyer, has condemned and criticized the proscription of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria(IMN) otherwise known as Shiite by the federal government on the ground that it infringes on their fundamental human right of freedom of association.

Speaking via a statement made available to newsmen, Falana pointed out similarities between how he stood against a violent attack by the police on President Muhammadu Buhari’s ANPP Party protest against former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s ”rigged” election in Kaduna in 2003 and the continued protest of Shiite members against Buhari, demanding for the release of their detained leader, Elzakzaky and his wife from the custody of the State Security Service.
