The police in Anambra state have arrested a widow, Mrs. Uju Obiekwe for allegedly using persons with “fake ailment” to beg for alms in the state.
Obiekwe, who was nabbed alongside her partners at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University junction, Awka, said she joined the fake beggars’ group after her husband died.
The widow and her partners in crime were caught at the point where they were using a young girl, with a bandaged stomach to beg for alms.
The widow, operating under a group called, “The Rescue Helpers People Foundation Incorporation” located in Oba, Idemili South council area of the state, said, “I joined the syndicate after the death of my husband. They pay me N1,500 daily. ”
The suspects were paraded by Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, Lady Ndidi Mezue.
According to her, the ministry would stop at nothing to rid the state of mentally challenged people and beggars.
