Yahya Jammeh’s image has been removed from Gambia’s national banknotes.
The country’s Central Bank has begun to share new notes.
According to reports, the Central Bank of Gambia distributed new 50, 100 and 200 notes of its Dalasi currency on Tuesday, August 7, after the image of Yahya Jammeh was removed from its national banknotes.
Recall Yahya Jammeh’s image was printed on all banknotes in The Gambia.
The image has now been replaced by poultry believed to be one of the national birds.
Local rights activist Madi Jobarteh said;
“A national currency is not personal property and the head of a sitting president should not be on that note.”
“There are many Gambians who deserve to be on these notes because of their role and contribution in the struggle for independence and development of this country since independence,” he added.
