The United States Senate on Wednesday evening acquitted President Donald Trump after weeks of impeachment trial.

Forty-eight senators, including one Republican, found Trump guilty of abuse of power, while 52, all Republicans, voted to acquit him.

The acquittal vote was the final step in a two-week trial marked by arguments from House Democrats against the President and stalwart support from Senate Republicans for the president.

If convicted on either charge, Mr Trump would have had to turn over his office to Vice-President Mike Pence.

The Democratic-led House of Representatives approved the articles of impeachment on 18 December.
