Citation, 2020

In the story, the main character, the best student on the faculty, accuses one of the university’s most popular professors, the holder of a Harvard degree and a whole bunch of awards, of harassment. It is up to the ethics committee of the university to look into these accusations, to listen to other students who are slow to speak out against the esteemed professor, and to decide whose side they will take. The action takes place in Nigeria, Senegal and Cape Verde, which is why the characters’ speech is a mix of English, French, and Portuguese. It is worth noting that this movie is much closer to our realities than any Western film about harassment and abuse of power.

Love Is War, 2019

Although this film is considered a dramatic comedy, it is more of a drama. At the head of the plot is the story of a Nigerian female politician who is invited to run for governor of the state. It shows the political life of the country with corruption, alliances and conspiracies, unfair campaigning, black PR and other niceties of the election race. What’s more, not only is the main character a woman, she also comes from another state and doesn’t speak the local language, which is an important detail for a political career. The movie ends with a confrontation between the heroine and her own husband for governor. And then the narrative moves from political struggle to issues of family, marriage, and personal ambition.
