Two Suspects Arrested For Selling Fake New Naira Notes In Enugu

Two suspects were arrested by police operatives serving in Igbo-Eze South Division of Enugu State Command after they were found in possession of counterfeited redesigned naira notes.

The Commissioner of Police, Enugu state command, Ahmed Ammani who spoke through the PPRO, Daniel Ndukwe said one Joseph Chinenye aged 39 and Onyeka Kenneth Ezeja aged 29, both male and respectively of Iheakpu-Awka in Igbo-Eze South LGA and Onicha Enugu-Ezike in Igbo-Eze North LGA, were arrested in possession of suspected counterfeited one hundred and eighty (180) pieces of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN’s) newly redesigned one thousand naira (N1,000) notes, with face value of one hundred and eighty thousand naira (N180,000.00).

He said Preliminary investigation shows, among other things, that the notes, which are in three separate batches, bear the same serial numbers of A/34:282656, A/46:578759 and 8/93:852942; while the suspects claimed to have secured the counterfeited Naira notes from an unidentified woman in Benin, Edo State.

The Commisioner said the suspects confessed to attempting to sell the notes to a POS operator, who rejected them, before the Operatives arrested them at a Filling Station in Ibagwa-Aka community of Igbo-Eze LGA, where they used the notes to purchase petrol.

He said the suspects will be arraigned in court upon consolidation and conclusion of investigation into the case by the State CID Enugu.

The Commisioner reassured the commitment of the Police to fish out and bring to book, criminal elements hellbent on perpetrating such acts of economic sabotage. He therefore, urges all and sundry to support the Police in this quest, while being vigilant and wary of who or how they obtain and carry out transactions with Naira notes, especially the new ones.

In a related development, 2 armed robbery suspects were arrested in their criminal hideout at New Artisan Enugu.

The Commisioner named the suspects as Chukwuneku Monday (a.k.a “Boss”) aged 39 and Agu Emmanuel (a.k.a “Fuckoyor”) aged 22.

He said the arrest was actualized through the combined efforts of Police Operatives and Detectives of Enugu State Command, respectively serving in Awkunanaw Police Division and the Anti-Robbery Section of the State CID Enugu, led to the recovery of two (2) locally-fabricated pistols, including one (1) Chief Revolver pistol with eight (8) live 9.mm calibre of ammunition.

According to him, the suspects, who confessed to having perpetrated acts of armed robbery and other heinous crimes in different parts of Enugu metropolis and its environ, will be arraigned in court once the consolidated investigation into the case is concluded at the State CID Enugu.

The Commissioner while commending the efforts of the Police Officers involved in the operational breakthrough enjoined citizens of the State to remain law-abiding and continue to assist the Command with credible information and/or intelligence she requires to rid the State of unrepentant criminals and the actualization of a secured, peaceful, credible and acceptable 2023 General Elections in the State.
