5 Common Mistakes Most Woman make During Pregnancy

pregPregnancy is one of the beautiful moments that every married woman awaits. It is the time of extreme happiness and joy for the would-be mother. The feeling of a new life growing in her womb is something that is exceptional and special. However, there are a lot of women who are unaware of the proper dos and don’ts of the period during their first pregnancy. This leads to certain common mistakes that a lot of pregnant women tend to make. Based on researches and professional opinions, here are 5 common mistakes that most women make during their pregnancy.

1. Eating for two
Pregnant women are either too worried about gaining a lot of weight or else they feel they are underweight. One has to understand that the quality of the food is what plays a significant role, rather than the quantity. Just because you are pregnant you do not need to consume extra calories until your second trimester. “The caloric requirement of pregnancy increases by only about 300 calories,” says Lisa Zaffner, nutritionist and director of operations at Healing Quest Center in Chicago. So, ‘eating smart’ should be your mantra. Have foods that are rich in vitamins, minerals and nutrients.

2. Improper sleeping habits
On a daily routine, about 5-6 hours of sleep is enough for a woman to revive her energy. However, this trend is not good when you are pregnant. As your body goes through major changes and hormonal modifications, you need 8-10 hours’ sleep. Dr. Kathryn Lee, PhD and a professor of nursing at the University of California at San Francisco, explains, “Women with a chronic sleep debt may not have the energy to get through labour and delivery.” Therefore, they may have to go for a C-section. So, a woman who sleeps well has an early delivery during labour.

3. Lack of exercise
A lot of women from the older generation still believe that a pregnant woman should keep her physical activities to as less as possible. This is however, not true for every expecting mother. Mild to moderate activities can be good for you and your baby’s health. Yoga is very well suggested for the wellbeing of the child growing inside you. One should carry on with their daily normal routine and also go for regular walks, unless the doctor announces any complications and advises for extra rest. Do take proper advice from your doctor on developing a proper fitness regime during pregnancy.

4. Tries to get extra information
Just like lack of knowledge can prove to be a risky bet, the same goes for extra information that women today try to get from different sources. It is important to know the basics about any phase including pregnancy, and it is definitely good to ask questions. But, make sure you cross-verify all the ideas and the dos and don’ts with a professional before blindly following them. Each woman’s physical health demands specific attention, so consult your gynaecologist about things that are or are not good for you.

5. Choosing a C-section
Many women choose to believe that a C-section will be less painful than a normal delivery. Contrary to the popular belief, a caesarean will lead to a longer period of recovery, difficulties in breast feeding, as well as might cause infections in the body if proper care is not taken. This is a good option only when there are complications in the pregnancy and doctor advises for it.

As an expecting mother it is your responsibility towards your baby and yourself to stay away from these five common mistakes.
