In the 72nd minute of the game, midfielder Mario Suarez picked up a second yellow card for handling the ball, while centre back, Diego Godin was dismissed in stoppage time after receiving a second booking for a high elbow.
Radamel Falcao had the best chance for Atletico, when his slow shot was well saved by goalkeeper Jordi Codina. With eight games left, Atletico now have 62 points while champions, Real Madrid have 65 points to occupy the second position.
At the news conference, Atletico coach, Diego Simeone was full of praise for his players and he had this to say “The lads are making a huge effort. They have had an impressive season and we have to keep the effort up for the last eight games”
On Saturday, leaders Barcelona maintained their 13- points advantage over Real Madrid with a 5- 0 drubbing of bottom club Real Marllorca as they closed in on a fourth title in five years.
In fourth place is Real Sociedad, after their 4- 2 win over Malaga at home on Saturday. The win means Soiedad are now 11 points behind Atletico Madrid as they vie for a Champions League spot.
