Undergraduate Set His Ex-Girlfriend Ablaze over Breakup

Ms. Winfred Oke, a female member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), serving in Buguma area of Rivers state, has been burnt to death by her ex-boyfriend, identified as Ogbonna, because she ended their relationship over his jealous nature.

abia_stateThe victim originated from from Amawom, Oboro in Ikwuano area of Abia state. She graduated the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.

The father of the deceased, Mr. Okechukwu Oke, 53, said that they did not know who Ogbonna was as he had not come to them to ask for the hand of their daughter in marriage.

Mr. Oke wondered why the man should be jealous to the point of wasting the life of their promising daughter.

He had been told learnt that whenever Ogbonna saw their daughter with anyone, he would become violent and that was why his daughter one day asked him to stay away from her.

Ogbonna allegedly poured petrol into the room Winifred was sleeping in at about 1 a.m. and threw in a lit match, thus setting the room ablaze.

When the fire raged, Winifred’s neighbours raised alarm and made efforts to rescue her.

Winifred, who was rushed to University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, died days after the incident.

The Police in Port Harcourt, River State, are currently questioning the suspect Ogbonna, an undergraduate of Michael Okpara University, who hails from Ovim, in Isikwuato LGA of Abia State.
