NCF Plans Open Camping to Create Opportunities for Young Cricketers Ahead of WCL D5.

Following Nigeria’s impressive performance at the ICC World Cricket League (WCL) Division six, which saw them finish runner-ups behind hosts Jersey and thus, grab the ticket for the WCL Division five, the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) revealed on Thursday that open camp for the tournament slated for February 2014 commences by the end of (September) the month.

Okon Ukpong, manager of the national team, revealed to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the open camping would enable the identification of younger players in the under-17 and under-19 categories, capable of playing for the national team.

“The Division five will hold in Malaysia in Fevruary and so hopefully, we will start the programme by the end of this month on an open basis, because we want to dilute the team a bit with younger players,” Ukpong said.

“We just want to get the boys to come and we look at their skills and work on them in terms of skills enhancement.”

He added that the qualification to Division 5 has further enhanced the need for sponsorship of the game.

According to the manager, the team will be in Abuja putting finishing touches to their strategies.
