Not less than 17 people have been killed and 70 others injured when a train and a lorry collided southwest of the Tunisian capital, according to the transport and interior ministries. Aljazeera reports:

Most of the dead were passengers on the train, which derailed, the transport ministry said. Both drivers were also killed. The accident happened at El Fahes, some 60km from Tunis, at around 6:30am (05:30 GMT) in the midst of the morning rush hour.

Interior Ministry Spokesman Mohammed Ali Aroui said that the train was heading to Tunis and that ambulances were sent from neighboring cities to El Fahes to transport the injured to hospitals.

“The death toll could rise,” Transport Minister Mahmoud Ben Romdhane told Mosaique FM radio.
