51 Nigerians and a Ghanaian have been charged by police in India for causing damage to property and assaulting police personnel along an Indian highway in the Indian state of Goa, it has been reported.

According to The Hindu Times, Goa Police on Tuesday filed the charge-sheet against the accused persons for as many as 15 charges before a Judicial Magistrate First Class court.

The charges include attempt to murder, rioting as well as assaulting or obstructing public servant and blocking the national highway. The incident occurred October 31, 2013.

It is also reported that of the 52 accused, 4 Nigerians are currently in the judicial custody in various drug cases, while 36 are under the police radar, and 8 have gone underground.

The violence broke out when demonstrators felt that the police were not taking the alleged murder of a Nigerian, Obodo Uzoma Simeon, by a local gang on the previous night seriously.

The mob had stopped the hearse van carrying the body along the highway. Policemen were assaulted, vehicles were damaged and the body of Simeon was pulled out of the hearse van and kept on the highway, disrupting traffic for over three hours.
