Serena Williams withdraws from Italian Open with knee injury

Tennis champion Serena Williams has pulled out of the Italian Open on Tuesday due to a knee injury.

The injury which has been persistent, caused the mother of one to doubt her performance in the forthcoming French Open later this month, prompting her to withdraw from the game.

Serena,37, who has won the Grand Slam singles 23 times, has struggled for some time now and has only completed two matches since the Australian Open. Se made it to the quarter-finals in that game.

Serena was due to face her sister Venus Williams in a highly anticipated second round clash in Rome.
