The Edo State governor,Godwin Obaseki of Edo has inaugurated the task force of immunisation activities in the state, the decision is to improve the uptake and reach of immunisation activities in the state.
The governor said during the inaugurating which took place at Government House in Benin that his administration was ready to ensure that every child in the state between the ages of zero to five years got immunised and protected against childhood killer diseases.
According to him, the state government is strengthening primary healthcare and one strategy is to get all children immunised, both in the cities and in the hinterland.
He said “the state in March this year achieved 75 immunisation coverage, but that is not up to the national average of 95 per cent.
“Our aim is to put in place a mechanism to reach every mother with new born baby via call services to ensure that no child is left out in our immunisation campaign.”
He added that the task force would be mandated to coordinate all immunisation activities in the state and mobilise resources to ensure that every child was immunised.
He urged members of the task force to live up to their responsibilities and ensure transparency and accountability in the discharge of their duties.
He also called on them to ensure that the state achieved 100 per cent immunisation coverage, “just as it has been polio-free since 2009.”
He listed members of the task force to include the state’s Deputy Governor, Hon. Philip Shiabu as Chairman, while the commissioners of health, information, education, women affairs and that of social development and commissioner of police are members.
Other members are representatives from Edo Traditional Council, Christian and Muslim bodies, Department of State Security, state’s immunisation officer, director of the state Primary Health Care, Rotary Club, National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPCDA), World Health Organistion, UNICEF and EU-SIGN
In his remarks, the chairman of the task force assured that the task force would fullfil the mandate given to it.
He said that the team would work to ensure that all the negative indices recorded during immunisation activities in the state were reversed.
