The Great debate: Should NYSC be scrapped, reviewed or retained?

nysc nigeria

Having lasted for about 38 years, many Nigerians opine that the NYSC program may have outlived its usefulness. Several corpers have died in the course of their service either as victims of violent outbreaks in the region where they served or due to the poor living conditions they face in the places they are posted to. Many families are still grieving the loss of their loved ones, mothers have buried the children they labored for, breast fed and invested so much time, care and money in.

The question is: is there any tangible proof that over the years, the NYSC scheme has been and still is fulfilling the purpose of its creation; that is to ensure national integration and co-existence? Are there any testimonies to this effect? Should the program continue simply because it provides employment for those in charge of supplying kits and other accessories for the NYSC programs while some of the NYSC members don’t live to see the end of the program? Is it actually even possible to secure the Youth corpers when it is on record that some NYSC members were murdered at a police station after a female corporal was beheaded and the police station itself was incinerated? Can the NYSC be a means of fostering national unity after all the grief it has already caused? Has any of one of those who think the program should remain ever lost a loved one in the course of the program? For how long will young vibrant Nigerians die senselessly at the hands of ignorant, illiterate brutes because the Government does not provide adequate security for its citizens?

  1. NYSC should not be scrapped but should be reviewed. Let the people that comes from West serve in their region, i.e. People from Ogun State can serve in Oyo or Ondo, while people from Ondo can serve in Osun or viz a viz. So, if these animals wants to kill or require blood, let them shed their own blood or their children’s blood instead of shedding innocent blood or how do we reconcile a child that has been brought up from infancy to that age to just drop dead in a day in the course of serving his father’s land? Pls. government should look into it, enough is enough. Let there be a review.

  2. I think NYSC should’nt be scraped, but instead it shld be reviewed in the sense that students should be posted to a state that belongs to their region, that is those in North shld serve in the north and those in the south should serve in the south. I think with, the number of copers lost as a result of ethnic or religous violence will drasticaly reduce.

  4. first of all, what is the purpose of NYSC? So many of us where not born when this useless service was establlished. if laws can be amended to suit the society i believe NYSC should be reviewed. let everybody serve in his/her geo political zone because it has lost it purpose. The gov’t should stop decieving us with there fake security promises they don’t keep because there no atom of security in our country (Nigeria)The only constant thing in life is change, lets stop going backward in life.

  5. The purpose of the NYSC has clearly been defeated. The post election violence is just one of the several instances corpers have lost their lives due to ethno-religious differences. Two points of interest remain (1) that if the program should be continued then candidates should present say 4 choices; of which one should be electronically selected for their posting. (2) Next the big question remains ” why is it that there is no serious investigation and intelligence reports of the Jos killings and other violence in the north..with the suspects being brought to book”..With this trend..violence will continue in this region and this we shall no longer accept!.Enough is enough!!!!

  6. I think d NYSC programme should be scrapped cuz its now pointless.
My sis is going 4 service dis year nd i would nt lyk it if she is posted outside our geo-political zone cuz we would av to keep prayin 4 protection.
What’s d purpose of being in a country when u cannot freely visit any part of that country?

  7. Fellow Nigerians, NYSC scheme should not be scraped out. Reasons; it exposes our young graduates to full practical world after the theory & minor practicals taught in the school, it serves as first experience a graduate gathers after school. Luckey ones are retained at the end of their service year. The simple truth is that the aim of NYSC has been defeat. Northern offenders are not purnished and so on. In summary, all geo-political zones should retain their graduates as corpers to avoid sheding of bloods of northerners. So that they will sock their blood when they want it & not that of innocent corp members & citizens.

  8. FELLOW NIGERIANS WE SHOULD NOT FORGET THAT INTERRACTION LEADS TO INFLUENCE .THE PURPOSE OF THE NYSC IS TO BUILD THE INTERRACTIVE POWER OF THE YOUTH IN THE COUNTRY AND MAKING THEM BLEND AND FURTHER THEIR KNOW -HOW ,REGARDS THE CULTURE OF THE PEOPLE IN SOME PARTS OF NIGERIA. WE CAN NOT OVER RULE GRIEVANCES IN SOME WAYS ,HOWEVER,MATURITY SHOULD BE APPLIED ON THE OTHER HAND ,TO PREVENT LOOSING ONE HEAD.IT IS UNFORTUNATE TO HEAR THAT SUCH AN ACTION OCCURED IN THE NORTHERN PART OF NIGERIA , INDEED , ONE CAN NOT SAY ALL THE PEOPLE THERE ARE BAD. IAM SURE MOST NORTHERN GRADUATES WOULD NOT HAVE LOVED HEARING THAT THEIR ACADEMIC COUNTERPARTS WERE NO MORE EVEN IN THEIR PLACE. THE POLITICAL SAGACITY IN THE NORTH HAVE ONLY RESULTED TO THIS ACTIONS . HOWEVER ,NYSC SCHEME SHOULD NOT BE SCRAPED OUT, INCASE OF FUTURE OCCURENCE POLICE SHOULD QUICKLY INTERVENED TO AVERT IRREPARABLE DAMAGE. WE SYMPATIZED WITH THE FAMILY OF THE DECEASED .GRADUATES.

  9. If for 38 years of the its existence, we have are yet to find our rythmn as regards national integration and unity, then it is pointless saying that you can still achieve that from the scheme…Imagine young nationals living in fear and uncertainty in a country claimed to belong to us all….Are we truly ONE??????

  10. Iam touched by the fact that there is no tangible reaction from the National Student Union executives from our various universities, the National Labour Congress, Human Right groups with the exception of SERAP that filed a suit against the Federal Government concerning this issue. Should we all fold our hands and watch in vain??

  11. let NYSC sustained. our four fathers have their reasons for the NYSC but Nigeria of today has bastardise the notion and this was done when the eyes was at the back of our head but now our eyes are at the front of our eyes so it should be review and only to call those DOGS to other

  12. THE MISCONDUCT OF SOME PEOPLE BROUGHT ABOUT THIS .HOWEVER , THE YOUTH IN ALL INSTITUTES OF HIGHER LEARNING SHOULD HAVE A DYNAMIC APPROACH TO THEIR INTERRACTIVE POWER. HONESTLY , THE REASON FOR BRINGING THE NYSC INTO THE PATHWAY OF THE NATION SHOULD NOT BE ERODED THROUGH THE MISCONDUCT OF SOME PEOPLE IN THE SOCIETY . AFTER ALL IT WAS NOT NYSC WHO MISBEHAVED. THOSE WHO MISBEHAVED REGARDS THIS MATTER SHOULD BE TAKEN TO THE CLASSROOM FOR PROPER SCOLDING.

  13. fellow nigerians, frm my point of view, nysc should be completely scrapped and sent into extinction becos
    1) it has lost its goal of purpose
2)after each batch of corpers, instead of unity, enemity is created
3)there is no batch of corpers, without d sheding of inocent blood
4)talking of retaining them after service, that is complete lie,it doesnt exsist in my country, every thing about job opportunity is based on whom u kw or bribery
5)wats d essence of serving my so called father abi mother land when i’m not sure of my security not to talk of feeding
why let our graduates waste 1 yr after which they bounce back to labour market
6)the truth is dis,FG is just using our future leaders to wash their hands, which kin nysc.NYSC my FOOT!!!!!!!!
I strongly vote for the scrapping off and extinction of NYSC

  14. In my own opinion, I don’t think that the NYSC program should be scrapped rather it should be reviewed. The part of the Nigeria Constitution which deals with the FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT AND LIBERTY TO DECIDE should be incorporated into the scheme. Intended or those due for the NYSC program should have the right to decide where they are posted to for their youth service hence having their own fate in their hand. Thanks..

  15. Hi, brothers and sisters of 9ja. I was highly disturbed with the comments and counter comments made by people on the recent post-presidential elections disturbances that occurred in some Northern States. The happening was another sore in the eyes of Nigeria, as most elections aftermath were dented by violence somewhere since independence. This is really disturbing.
The recent violence led to among others, the killings of innocent, patriotic, aspiring, courageous, youths whose lives, if spared could have continue to contribute immensely to the development of our beloved Nation. However, fate has it that they sacrifice their precious lives in the service of the Nation, as Youth Corps Members, they are heroes worthy of emulation and they should not be forgotten.
In making comments on subjects as touching as this sad event, people should be less sentimental, put their own selves in the position of the offended and act with wisdom. I said this because most of the comments I came across where abusive, with a lot of sentiments. We should see ourselves as Nigerians, when making comments not Northerners, Southerners, Christians, Muslims, Hausas, Igbos, or Yorubas.
What led to the killings were the result of immature democracy, poverty and illiteracy among others. The Almajiris are not to blame, but what led them to take this action all in the name of election results. Prior to the elections, these young corps members were not killed; we should ask ourselves why should they be killed when elections were held? I think the political class should answer this question the most.
The political class was less sincere with us Nigerians. As it was reported prior to the elections, campaigns were held in religious places, compelling voters to vote along religious lines. These had happened all over Nigeria. The story could have been different if one of the three Northern candidates was declared winner, I guess, the violence could have been reported in the Southern part.
What we now need is sincerity of purpose by our leaders in awakening Nigerians that, this Nation belong to all of us. This assertion should be demonstrated in all their actions. God bless Nigeria.
There is no justifiable reason(s) that can lead to the scrapping of the NYSC scheme. Hundred of thousands if not millions of Nigerian youth have passed through this process over coming so many difficulties. The current mishap was not targeted solely on members of the NYSC; they are only among the victims.
The scheme has helped in re-uniting Nigeria among its elite, most of whom I believe have passed through the system. Rather than abolishing it, the system could be reviewed with the aim of improving it for better results.

  16. Mr Ozoh, it is really disheartening and touching to loss a life, not even to talk of a blood relation. May the souls of all those that perish in the mishap rest in peace.
We should take heart and put the service of our Nation first. It is really heroic to die in serving the Nation for its unity in progress. The issue here is NYSC is designed primarily to poster unity among the diverging populace. However, ignorance, deceit, lack of patriotism and poverty among the some youth is putting the unity of Nigeria at stake. Abolishing the Scheme will further deteriorate the little unity we have among the population.
Leaders at every level, try their best in providing essential services to the nation towards reducing levels of poverty and ignorance for the unity of Nigeria.

  17. NYSC in my opinion should be scrapped, it is totally pointless to serve in your region when the main purpose of serving at all is for unity, for you to learn about diverse culture and language, of what use is it if a yoruba girl serves in another yoruba city, people saying it should be retained, have you ever lost anyone, like your sister, brother, friends or even siblings, maybe neighbours…..i guess not, do u have an idea what pain and sorrow this brings to the family of those who have? i guess not……well ask me and i’ll tell you…..innocent lives were taking for selfish reasons, girls raped because they dont understand the languages, all sort of things that are not even in the news…….i really wanna serve my fathers country but not after what i have seen, heard and the pain and grief that will forever leave a scar in my life……..may the good lord console everyone that has lost someone in this course

  18. I believe the NYSC should be scrapped. Quite frankly Nigeria as other issues that are of greater gravity, for example, the prevalence of corruption throughout every level of society. Not to mention the ridiculously high levels of poverty, whilst the greedy leaders of the country continue to line the pockets of theirs family and friends.

  19. i think it should be turned into an internship programme, where the students have options to work in their area of study and disciplins. having said that, they should scrap the three weeks camp, we are not in military rule anymore and people are being treated like animals, and low living conditions. turn it something better and more productive, something both, the graduates, the government and the employers will benefit from

  20. The reasonfor which NYSC was set up was to foster national unity and to encourage youths to earn more about other places.looking at the programme we cant but agree that the theme has been defeated.
tell me who wants to be kiled or lose a loved one in the name of NYSC?damn the heroism, its useless to die for Nigeria,as it it is now

if one is posted to his region,of what use is it?
it should be scrapped or converted to an internship period where ppl choose where they will do it.

It is impt to note that many folks are against scrapping NYSC bcos they enrich themselves through the programme and the students just suffer
also, worthy of note is the fact that the northerners benefit from the cheap labour more than others.if we all hv to serve in our region, some regions will not hv workers

  21. The fact that plane crashes doesn’t mean people should avoid boarding air travel, point to be made here is the fact that for everything that. has merit, demerits is inevitable, imperatively effort should be made to improve and block all loopholes so as to make the scheme achieve it’s objectives and purposes
