The BBC World Service Trust is the BBC’s international charity. We use media and communications to reduce poverty and promote human rights, thereby enabling people to build better lives.We work in partnership with governments, broadcasters, media professionals, and civil society institutions in developing and transitional countries to deliver our programmes. We also partner with UN agencies and international NGOs.

One of our primary objectives is to strengthen the media in developing countries. We share BBC expertise with broadcast and production partners, delivering extensive training and change management programmes in Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.

The BBC World Service Trust in Nigeria, the BBC’s international development charity which tackle poverty, human rights and health issues through creative use of the media is seeking to recruit experienced individuals who will join the Team based in Abuja on a new project. The project aims to address and improve the numerous health challenges plaguing women and children in our society through media development activities which will be designed to boost the capacity of media partners in the focal states to serve the public interest.

The positions are in Abuja based but may involve travelling to the local states in Nigeria and the contract duration is expected to be one year, with a six month probation period. Salary will be based on experience but does not include moving or relocation allowance to duty station.

1. Project Manager

Duties:
The project manager must have experience in managing projects on all or any areas of the following: Family Planning (FP), Reproductive Health (RH) and Prevention of Malaria. He/She will take the lead and provide direction in all technical and administrative functions in line with the execution and implementation policies of the Trust and donor requirements.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience:

Minimum of 3 years working experience in the management and implementation of complex donor funded projects, including logframes and deliverables.
Strong editorial judgement and substantial radio production experience. Proven ability to analyse and critically evaluate editorial content, identifying strengths and weaknesses in programme content and driving constant improvement in output.
Possess strong oral, written communication, presentation skills and be proficient in the use of relevant information technology packages.
Demonstrate commitment to media and development in West Africa. Thorough understanding of the best practices in project implementation and media training, understanding of the Nigerian media industry and the use of communication to build long term development solutions.

Qualification:

Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Humanities, Social Sciences or any related field.
A masters degree will be an added advantage.

2. Senior Producer

Duties
Supervise and co-ordinate the production of a group of outputs and ensure the achievement of programme objectives. To be involve with developing and implementation innovative behavior change communication strategies for the production department

Skills/Knowledge/Experience:

A full command and up to date knowledge of modern English and Hausa language including complete comprehensive of written and spoken English to communicate effectively
Ability to write, adapt and translate with accuracy, clarity and style appropriate to differing audiences and forms of media
Possess ability to analyze and critically evaluate editorial content, identifying strengths and weaknesses in programme content and drive for perfection
Minimum of 5 years experience working in the media and in similar position is required

Qualification:

A good first degree in Mass Communication, Communication arts, theater arts, English or the social sciences or any related field. An advance degree in any relevant field above will be an advantage
An additional certificate/training in scriptwriting/editing, programme production, directing will be an added advantage

3. Producer (Drama)
4. Producer (Hausa Magazine Programme)

Duties (for 3 and 4)

The producer will create, design, plan and produce programmes on agreed themes, facilities scripts writing, editing and production using and developing appropriate mechanisms and systems while ensuring complaince with established procedures
Coordinate the activities of writers, actors, directors, sound engineers and other personnel throughout the production process

Skills/Knowledge/Experience:

Excellent script writing, communication and interpersonal skills and be well versed in the use of the computer
Possess the ability to develop, design or create new applications, ideas, relationships, systems, or products including artistic productions
Evidence of high editorial skills, making sound judgments on editorially sensitive progrmme issues
Evidence of imagination an enthusiasm for generating new and original ideas
Minimum of 4 years experience working in the media and in similar position is required

Qualification:

A good first degree in Mass Communication, Communication arts, theater arts, English or the social sciences or any related field. An advance degree in any relevant field above will be an advantage
An ability to speak, read and write Hausa for Hausa magazine programmes

5. Assistant Producer (Hausa Magazine Programme)
6. Assistant Producer (Radio Drama)

Duties (for 5 and 6)
The assistant producer will support the work of the production department by working directly with the producer (Hausa language magazine prog) to deliver specific messaging and themes required by the funding partners

Skills/Knowledge/Experience:

Excellent script writing, communication and interpersonal skills and be well versed in the use of the computer,
Possess the ability to develop, design or create new applications, ideas, relationships, systems, or products including artistic productions
Evidence of high editorial skills, making sound judgments on editorially sensitive programme issues
Evidence of imagination an enthusiasm for generating new and original ideas
Minimum of 2 years experience working in the media and in similar position is required

Qualification:

A good first degree in Mass Communication, Communication arts, theater arts, English or the social sciences or any related field.
An additional certificate/training in scriptwriting/editing, programme production, directing will be an added advantage.
Fluency in written and spoken English and Hausa language for Hausa magazine programme.

7. Senior Research Officer (Quantitative)

Support the effective design, co-ordination and administration of research for all the trust projects (e.g mass media, health, government and livelihood) comprising if baseline studies (e.g surveys), process research and impact evaluation
To be primarily responsible for quantitative research activities conducted by the trust and undertake the conduct of all research sampling, questionnaire design and data analysis when required
Oversee the supervision of research work of other team members as determine by the head of unit

Skills/Knowledge/Experience:

Strong quantitative research skills (sampling and survey design, data management and analysis using SPSS questionnaire design etc)
Experience supervising and running field research teams, for quantitative studies as well as quantitative studies
Ability to speak and write one or more of the following Nigerian language Hausa, Yoruba and/or Igbo
Good IT skills, including MS word, excel and powerpoint

Qualification:

A good first degree in health sciences, behavioral sciences, the social sciences or the humanities
Master degree in any of the discipline above will be an added advantage

8. Research Officer (Qualitative)

Duties

Assist in the effective design, co-ordination and delivery of research for all the mass media health, good governance and livelihood campaign comprising of formative research, process research (pre testing of outputs) and impact evaluation
Undertake the conduct of all research sampling, discussion guides and questionnaire design
Ability to speak and write one or more of the following Nigeria Languages, Hausa will be an advantage

Skills/Knowledge/Experience:

Qualitative research skills (moderating analysis and interpretation of data)
Some knowledge of quantitative research techniques and how they are informed by qualitative methods
A good grasp or enthusiasm to learn about, communication strategies, development issues and public health issues.
Experience of writing precise and clear reports and briefing documents
Minimum of 3 years progressive working experience
Good IT skills, including MS word, Excel and Power point

Qualification:
A good first degree in health sciences, behavioural sciences, the social sciences or the humanities

9. Producer/Trainer

The post is Abuja based but will involve travels to the local states.

Duties
The successful candidate will be delivering various training activities at partner radio stations across Nigeria and working with relevant partner organizations such as a radio/TV stations, civil society organizations, and other USAID partners

Skills/Knowledge/Experience:

Strong editorial judgment and substantial radio production experience, including production of audience participation formats, proven ability to analyze and critically eventuate editorial content, identifying strengths and weaknesses in programme content and driving constant improvement in output
Minimum of 3 years experience in planning training courses and training of journalist and willingness to develop skills in these areas. through under standing of best practice in media training, strong understanding of the role of communications in development.

Qualification:
Minimum of a Bachelor’s in humanities, social or management science or any related courses.
