As the world marks the International Women’s Day, Rep. Abike Dabiri-Erewa (ACN-Lagos) has called for elimination of all forms of violence against women.
In a statement issued in Abuja to mark the International Women’s Day, Dabiri- Erewa bemoaned the increasing violence on women in the country.
“It is quite gladdening that the House of Representatives has taken a major step in this regard by passing a bill for an Act to eliminate all forms of violence against persons’’.
“The Bill sponsored by Hon. Abike Dabiri- Erewa, prescribes life imprisonment for rape and a minimum of 20 years for anyone involved or an accomplice in gang rape’’
“The bill also seeks compensation for victims of rape. It also deals with domestic violence, political violence, harmful traditional practices, and protection of widows among others’’.
She said the bill also criminalizes rape, gang rape, female circumcision, domestic and political violence, acid attacks and protection of widows.
The lawmaker expressed optimism that the bill would soon be passed by the Senate and subsequently signed into law by the President.
Dabiri-Erewa, however, congratulated the womenfolk all over the globe and asked them to remain committed to the protection of women dignity and emancipation of womanhood. (END).
