With Robert Lewandowski on his way out of Borussia Dortmund, Christian Benteke has emerged top target to replace the Polish striker.

According to Sportsmail, Dortmund chief negotiator made a personal check on the Belgian in their game against Chelsea and returned to Germany convinced the 22- year- old has what it takes to lead their attack next season.

The striker was sent off in Chelsea’s 2-1 win, but his performance in the match where he gave Villa an early lead impressed Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc.

On returning to Dortmund, Zorc consulted with manager Jurgen Klopp and delivered a glowing report on Benteke.

Twelve months after signing the Belgian from Genk for a bargain fee of £7 million, it is believed Aston Villa are likely to ask at least £20 million for their star striker, with Tottenham and Arsenal both in the race.
