Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers says the club would handle the “pressure” of every game as they come in their bid to put a smile in about “533 million Liverpool supporters’s?” face.
A second-minute Younes Kaboul own goal, Luis Suarez’s 29th goal of the ongoing campaign, Philippe Coutinho effort from 25 yards and Jordan Henderson’s low free-kick sealed an eighth successive league victory for the ‘Reds’, who are well on course to clinching a first domestic title since the 1989-90 season.
Six wins from their last six matches will see the current crop of the ‘Kops’ achieve greatness, with rivals Chelsea and Manchester City yet to visit Anfield.
“We have won eight games in a row and we will enjoy that. It’s just about going back to work next week and we have a tough game against West Ham next,” said Rodgers.
“The dream is for our supporters, they want to win the title. It has been a long time but it’s not in my thinking. We just need to prepare and do well and if we do that, we will win games.”
The 4-0 drubbing of a toothless Spurs moved Rodgers’ side two points ahead of Chelsea and four in front of Manchester City, though Manuel Pellegrini’s side have played two games fewer than their title rivals.
“To perform like we did from the first minute was immense. We are very confident with how we play. Tottenham have some outstanding players and I hope Tim gets time to put his ideas in place,” Rodgers added.
The Northern Irish boss stressed their performance against Tim Sherwood’s team serves as a response to his counterparts’ questioning of their ability to deal with the pressure of the run-in.
Prior to the Super Sunday clash, Sherwood has suggested Liverpool could suffer in their bid to clinch a first title in the Premier League era.
Rodgers said: “Today we answered the question about pressure. We like to dominate the ball and you saw that today, the movement, confidence and composure was good. We fight as at team to get the ball back and overall I was very proud of the team.
“We have got flexibility and that is what we are trying to develop and the players are comfortable with that.
If Liverpool could win at Norwich, Crystal Palace and West Ham, as well as down their two rivals, they could well become the jokers of the 2013/14 league campaign. But Rodgers want to handle the pressure one game at a time.
“We were seventh last year so the expectancy wasn’t there at the start of the season. Now we are up there at the top of the league with that pressure. That is eight wins in a row and that takes some going at this level,” Rodgers explained.
“We now just concentrate on the next game which is West Ham and that is what we will focus on. I think there will be points dropped by all the teams before the end of the season.”
