Ardent of followers of Nigerian politics were shocked on Thursday as Speaker, House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, picked the notice of intent and nomination forms that will enable him run for the 2015 presidential election under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Tambuwal’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had been believed as a move intended to enable the Speaker run for the governorship of his state, Sokoto, but what seem like a sudden turn around came as a surprise to many.
Analysts have however described the surprise as a good one, as it may mean the APC has finally understood why fielding Former Head of State Muhammadu Buhari might make the party’s chances in the 2015 presidential election slimmer.
According to an ardent follower of developments in the APC who craved anonymity, the party might have seen Tambuwal as their best chance against President Goodluck Jonathan, as none of the front runners in the party’s presidential bid looks strong enough to beat the incumbent.
Tambuwal, who is known to be loved by many, is suspected to have been persuaded to drop any governorship ambition he had, and go for the top spot.
According to the source, plans seem to have been put in place to ensure Tambuwal wins APC’s presidential primaries, if the other candidates do not step down for him.
While Tambuwal will be thinking of electioneering campaign after reportedly picking up the nomination form, his position as Speaker of the House of Representatives is still being contested by the PDP, as the ruling party insists his defection has made his continued stay as Speaker illegal.
The House of Representatives resumes sitting on December 3.
