The embattled leadership of world football’s governing body, Fifa, have scheduled an extraordinary elective congress for 26 February, 2016 in Zurich.
Members of Fifa’s executive committee gathered in Zurich on Monday to finalise the timetable for the special congress to vote on Sepp Blatter’s successor.
Among the agenda, includes initial plans for reforms towards amending the image of the governing body, which has been hit by corruption scandals in recent months.
Blatter and his secretary Jerome Valcke will address the media by 3pm CET (2pm Nigerian time)- the first time the 59-year old president will face the media since announcing his imminent departure in June.
Top Fifa officials and marketing associates are faced with charges of corruption, conspiracy, bribery and racketeering in a separate but tandem investigations by Swiss and U.S. authorities.
Seven high ranking Fifa officials were arrested in dawn raids at a five-star hotel in Zurich just a couple of days to its annual congress in May.
Fifa vice-president Jeffrey Webb pleaded not guilty at a New York court on Saturday and was released on a $10m bail.
Blatter was re-elected for a fifth term at the congress but announced he will stand down at an extraordinary congress four days later. He also said he will not stand as a candidate again.
Fifa rules states that candidates must declare their intentions to run four months prior of elections.
There has been pressure on Fifa to allow for an independent, third-party, commission to oversee processes leading to the forthcoming elective congress.
