Real Madrid forward, Cristiano Ronaldo has been named by UEFA as the best player in Europe, capping what has been a phenomenal year for him.
Ronaldo led Portugal to a win at the Euros and also won the Champions League trophy with Real Madrid. The award was decided by voting- with 55 journalists casting their votes.
In the end, Ronaldo beat his teammate, Gareth Bale as well as Atletico Madrid man, Antoine Griezmann by large margins. Ronaldo had 40 votes while Griezmann had 8, Bale completed the top three with just 7 votes.
He said while receiving the award; “It’s a great honour. My team-mates are the key – they are the key every year. I work hard myself but without their help this would not be possible. Thanks to my team-mates from Real Madrid and Portugal. [Winning EURO] was different because I’ve won the Champions League three times now. To win something with Portugal was the highlight of my career.”
