A 60-year-old man, Akanni Timothy, allegedly committed suicide hours to the commencement of his father’s funeral in Abeokuta yesterday, as relations blamed his suicide on his lack of financial capability to give his late father a befitting burial.
The incident threw the hilly town into confusion as the lifeless body of the father of eight, fondly called ‘Marshal’ was found dangling on an orange tree close to the venue of the funeral at Ojugunuko, Oke-Ijemo area of Abeokuta.
The body was said to have been found by passers-by who raised the alarm which attracted residents. An eye witness confirmed that the deceased was preparing for the funeral slated for yesterday.
The news of his death dispersed many of the guests who were reportedly settled down for the party.
Some described the incident as a spiritual attack on the family. However, some relations attributed the incident to the financial challenges facing the late Akanni.
One of the siblings of the deceased, who simply identified himself as Mutiu, said his late brother was in dire need of money to give their late father a befitting burial.
“I told Baba Sadiat (the deceased) to join me in my tent if he knew he didn’t have the means to entertain his guests. I did not know he will kill himself”.
According to him, the family received permission from the police at Ijemo who visited the scene of the incident before they removed the body of the deceased.
Efforts to reach the Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Police Command, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, however proved abortive.

No one actually knows the reason for his death, but if it is true that the decease committed suicide because of financial deformity over his late father’s funeral then he is an ignorant of highest order.
If his father had done a Funeral Plan Assurance Cover with us, @ Royal Exchange Group, this wouldnt hav happened.
It pains alot when some one finds him or her self in a situation similar to this…. Buh as it is, one should endavour to keep faith to God cos He knwz d best for us rada dan going ahead to get in2 such activity f self a murder, WAT! A WORLD!!
