Assemblies Of God Church Members Clash In Enugu As Crisis Deepens

Crisis in the Assemblies of God Church Nigeria has taken a new twist as two camps yesterday clashed in Enugu, leaving a number of people wounded.

The clash was said to have been caused by the attempt by a faction loyal to the Assistant General Superintendent, Rev. Chidi Okoroafor, to hold an anti-Paul Emeka meeting at Isiagu Street, Achara Layout branch of the church.

Rev. Paul Emeka, the embattled General Superintendent of the church and some top members had engaged in a protracted dispute over issues relating to lack of accountability and conspiracy in the church’s leadership.

The anti-Emeka members of the church’s executive committee had slated a meeting yesterday to review the crisis that engulfed the church, following the purported suspension of the General Superintendent by a group in the church.

The District Pastor in charge of Isiagu street branch of the church, Pastor Isaac Ochu, who is in the anti-Emeka faction, accepted to host the meeting, even when some leaders of his branch, including the deacons, were opposed to the meeting.

Pastor Ochu was said to have announced the meeting last Sunday but his members who were sympathetic to the GS, told him point-blank that the meeting of the alleged renegades should not hold in the church.

Pastor Ochu was said to have ignored their advice and went ahead to convene the meeting in his church but unknown to him, the deacons in the church had mobilized their colleagues from other branches to barricade the entrances to the church.

Sensing that there could be danger at the meeting venue, the anti-Emeka group reportedly invited soldiers to the church Monday night but were withdrawn in the early hours of yesterday.

However, when the participants who were mostly pastors from different branches of the church in the state arrived for the meeting yesterday morning, they met a stiff resistance by the pro-Eneka group and as they tried to force their way into the church, a fight broke out between the two groups.

The anti-Emeka group, according to an eyewitness, was overpowered as the pastors ran for their dear lives and later moved to an undisclosed place in Trans-Ekulu to hold the meeting.

The pro-Emeka group remained at the church premises until yesterday evening but declined to speak with newsmen.

But some of the deacons were heard threatening that Pastor Ochu would not be allowed to preside over the affairs of the church, henceforth, for identifying with the renegades who they accused of trying to destroy the church. [Vanguard]

  1. It is God’s church & only Him will intervene in His church bcos coruptn cannot fight coruptn. My prayr is dat God will help our leaders so dat they will not end in hell fire which they told us abt.

  2. But if Rev Chidi can only remember some of his messages like “So you later came here” he would not fight over mundane things and for God sake Rev Paul waited until he got to his turn, why all the truobles. Last days sign

… shame .. is this how apostle Paul and the early disciples manage the gospel and it reach our hand. until we re ready to liv like Christ . Take our self as nothing and then willing to die for Sake of the Gospel then we can handle church affairs .

  5. Church leaders that suppose to be good example to their congregation and people outside the church are now object of ridicule and dishonor to God. Money has replace the Holy Spirit in them. What they worship now is money.
They have left their primary call for lust of worldly pleasure. The spiritual role that suppose to be foremost is now on the rear.
By their fruit you shall know them. Mt.7:21 (NLT) states, “Not all people who sound religious are really godly. They may refer to me as ‘Lord,’ but…The decisive issue is whether they obey my Father in heaven.’
Mt.16:24 (NLT) makes it clear “If anyone of you wants to be my follower, you must put aside your selfish ambition, shoulder your cross, and follow me.” These type of ministers successfully deceived church members because they lack the knowledge of the scriptures, Mt.22:29. That is why Christians should not rely only on sermons in the church or interpretations of the bible given teachers of the book, but find time to read it on their own and ask Holy Spirit to interprete it to them. When you lack the knowledge of the scriptures you become prey for the self called ministers of God, ‘the stomach ministers’.
Jn.7:18 (NLT) states, “Those who present their own ideas are looking for praise for themselves, but those who seek to honor the one who sent them are good a…”
A Christian without the Holy Spirit is far from been genuine and can be easily deceived and swept back into the world. Ask for the Holy Spirit who will guide, guard, counsel, direct and teach you more about God and his way.
The fact is that if you are not in Christ, you are in crisis. May there be divine intervention to the crisis, so that it will not drag more people out of the fold.
