Andy Murray began the defence of his Wimbledon title with victory over unseeded David Goffin.
Seeded third for this year’s tournament, Murray received a rapturous reception as he walked on to Centre Court to a standing ovation.
The returning men’s singles’s champion, 27, wasted no time in dispelling the 105th-ranked Belgian 6-1, 6-4, 7-5, to set up a second round match with Slovenian Blaz Rola.
“I thought it was a very high standard match,” Murray told BBC Sport.
“I was glad to finish it in three. Sometimes you can win in three sets and not play that well, but I’m pleased with the way I struck the ball.
“I was nervous this morning and I was nervous last night, but once you sit down on the chair it’s time to get on with this year.”
As the first British man to defend the Wimbledon title since Fred Perry won his third in 1936, Murray had loads of support from his grandparents to dad Willy watching from the Royal Box, while his mother and new coach Amelie Mauresmo and the rest of the team gazed from nearby.
It victory means Murray has now won his 14th consecutive match at the All England Club.
