Group Asks FG To Ban Importation Of Tankers

The National Association of Trailer and Tanker Builders of Nigeria wants the Federal Government to ban importation of tankers into the country.

“What we manufacture here is most suitable for our roads, because we have over the years understood what was appropriate in terms of materials to use in manufacturing such products and the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) had examined and certified our products good for our roads,” the association said in a press release issued to congratulate one of its members, Dr Muritala Odesola on his 50th birthday.

According to the association, most accidents on Nigerian roads are caused by imported products that has specifications only suitable for where it was brought and not for our own roads here.

The association noted that “apart from economic benefits Nigeria will derive from stopping the importation of such products, safety of our road users should also be considered.

“Local tanker, trailer manufacturers have come of age and have earned the confidence of its local consumers; what is left is for our government to complement our efforts,” the association stated.

It therefore pleaded with the government to come up with policy that would encourage local manufacturers’ growth, so as to stop overdependence on imported mechanical products.
