The people of Anambra State have commended their Governor, Willie Obiano, for abolishing levies to cushion their suffering following the economic recession in the country.
In separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the residents lauded the governor, saying that it should be carried out to the letter.
They also said that it was a show of empathy by the governor.
Kenneth Adindu, a trader, said with such pronouncement by the governor, relevant organs to enforce them should be on their toes.
“I was elated when he said that all manner of education levies in our schools should be stopped. Now what is expected of the state education ministry is to carry out investigation in schools.
“We the parents do not know the actual amount we are to pay per term, there should be uniform amount and made public for us to stop paying variant sums in different schools in the state,” he said.
A bus driver, Okey Obiorah, on his part said he was happy when his colleagues told him of the suspension of the payment of emblem fees by the governor.
“Due to my inability to get enough money to pay for emblem, I have been avoiding those guys that impound buses and make us suffer the more for nonpayment.
“I can now hustle well to make ends meet by plying all roads to realise enough to take care of all that depend on the bus, including giving garage boys theirs,” he said.
Luke Obi, a wheel barrow pusher, said that now that NAN had broken the news to them, it would spread to their more than 500 members in Eke Awka Market.
“Most of us did not hear this news, if not you telling us. Government’s levy collectors would have come and we will ignorantly pay,’’ Obi said.
Mr. Obiano in a message said “I am happy to announce to you that I have come up with a stimulus package that will ease the pain of the recession and help our dear state to bounce back to prosperity.
“Consequently, our intervention comes in four key areas – tax relief programme, special intervention programmes for small and medium enterprises and large enterprises and social intervention programme for low income households and finally, intervention in infrastructure-for-jobs,” the governor had said.
