Super Falcons Asisat Oshaola Says Female Players Deserve More

The CAF Female player of the year, Asisat Oshaola who also plays for Arsenal ladies has insisted that African female football players deserve more.

Oshaola was one of the most influential players who powered Nigeria’s Super Falcons to the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title in 2016. Despite winning the title, the players were owed their bonuses and allowances and were forced to resort to weeks of public protests before they were paid.

The 22-year-old striker said, “This is a fight about the welfare of the team. It’s about the way the team has been handled over the years.”

She added: “The award is not for me, it is for all the female footballers in Africa, to speak for us.

“We know the federations can do better.

“The men have been doing it for years and they have seen a lot of improvements in the game – if the females can get half of that it would definitely bring joy to a lot of girls and a lot of kids out there who feel they are hopeless right now.”
