Court Sentences 8 Beggars To Jail In Lagos

sentence

Eight beggars have been sentenced to one month imprisonment by the Special Offences court in Alausa, Ikeja, for begging on the streets of Lagos state.

The beggars were arrested by officials of the Office of Youth and Social Development, Lagos State at different spots in the Lagos metropolis and charged to court.

The beggars were arraigned on a three-count charge of conducting themselves in a disorderly manner without visible means of livelihood and therefore deemed to have committed an offence punishable under the criminal law of Lagos State.

They were also charged with conducting themselves in manner likely to cause breach of peace and thus committed an offence punishable under the same criminal law of Lagos State 2011.

The last count declared that the beggars received, demanded for dues and collected unauthorized levy from persons and committed an offence punishable under section two of the Illegal Collection of Dues in Public Place (prohibition) Law of Lagos State 2003.

The beggars pleaded guilty to the charges, and were sentenced by the presiding magistrate to one month imprisonment or a fine of N5,000 each.

  2. Haba Governor Fashola you no try at all. How can you jail men of this age? What if one of them was ur father would you have jailed him? Abeg let’s hear word. Joor, you don’t want beggars in Lagos, Let me tell u for ur information, even in America we have beggars there not to talk of Lagos state. mitcheeeew.

  3. Yes.Governor Fashola is right. This is Lagos State not Kano or Sokoto or any Northern States. It is not the duty of Fashola to provide job for those shameless Hausas whose tradition is to beg and litter the streets.Let their various States to recall them and give them work if at all they can work as they are used to begging. How can I travel all the way from East to go and beg elsewhere. We the Igbos disapprove of such and I am sure the Yorubas frown at such.If the Northerners must beg let it be within their home or they must work elsewhere instead of constituting nuisance everywhere in the name of one Nigera. Most don’t go to Western school and so can’t fit in to office work or be relevant for anything. The Hausa/Fulanis have rule for long to address such shame but they didn’t.Is it Fashola who should do it for them in Lagos? Those using them for selfish business(I mean their brothers who courier them)should help them.Their transport fare to Lagos is enough for them to start business in small scale and grow.Fashola ride on!

  4. What a nonsense? Fashola and d so called judges are worst than fools, why will he jailed those old men, what are their offence. When do begging becomes offence in our country? After all they are more just and better than those thieves in our government houses.

  7. I shed tears when I read the posting and saw the picture. I do not know whether or not what was done was right or wrong. We all believe in one God, the Best Judge. Let us wait for His judgment as “whoever does an atom weight of good will see and whoever does an atom weight of bad will see.”
