United Turns down Chelsea’s Improved Offer for Rooney.

Manchester United reportedly dismissed Chelsea’s fresh Wayne Rooney bid made on Sunday understood to be in the region of £25m plus add-ons.

Rooney’s desire to quit Old Trafford could end up with the striker tendering a formal transfer request later this week, but United remains adamant the 27-year-old is not for sale.

A United spokesman said: “A bid was received yesterday and immediately rejected. Our position remains that he is not for sale.”

Rooney has grown restless at United since the arrival of Dutchman Robin van Persie which forced him into playing second choice roles and remains disenchanted with former manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s allegedly erroneous report that he asked to leave the Premier League champions last season.

Moyes and Rooney have been in regular contact and there has already been discussions on a personal level, but it remains to be seen if the Scot could count on the unsettled forward amidst interest from Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, who has said the England international is the Blues’ primary target ahead of next season.

Chelsea’s improved offer comes at the back of an earlier £20m bid in July which was also out-rightly rejected by United.

Rooney has impressed backroom staff at Carrington with his work-rate since coming home early from United’s pre-season tour of Asia. He will train with United on Monday and will then make a first public appearance for United since May 5 in Sweden on Tuesday in a pre-season friendly match against AIK Stockholm.
