Croatia’s Borna Coric has won the Lagos Tennis Championship men’s singles Futures 1, defeating countryman Ante Pavic 6-4, 6-3 to the 35 ATP ranking points trophy.
The 16-year-old tournament’s sixth seed’s victory at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Court, Onikan, came in the wake of a 2013 US Open Junior Championship triumph at Flushing Meadows, New York.
“Winning the US Open junior tournament gave me the confidence that I could win the Governor’s Cup. I worked hard and it paid off for me,” Coric said on claiming his first Futures win in Lagos.

“I am so glad that I came to Lagos as a player on number 525 in the world ranking, but winning this leg has improved my ranking. This is a great leap. I’m looking forward to the second leg with high expectation of winning it.”
Slovenia’s Tadeja Majeric claimed the First City Monument Bank (FCMB) Governor’s Cup women’s singles Futures 1 final.
She saw off Dalila Jakupovic of Slovakia in two hard-fought sets, eventually winning 7-5, 7-5.
In the men’s doubles final, the pair of Ante Pavic of Croatia and South Africa’s Ruan Roelofse beat Croatian duo of Borna Coric and Dino Marcan 7-6, 6-2.
Britons, Naomi Broady and Emily Webley-Smith beat Cristina Dinu of Romania and Fatima Al Nabhani of Omar 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 to clinch the women’s doubles crown.
