Nigerian Cricketers Set for a Training Tour of Sri Lanka.

Nigeria’s senior male cricket team will depart for a training tour of Sri Lanka on February 22 ahead of their participation in the World Cricket League (WCL) Division 5, team manager Okon Ukpong has disclosed.

Ukpong, speaking with journalists in Lagos on Sunday, said the team had commenced camping in Abuja on January 22.

“The cricketers are doing all that is possible to prepare properly for the competition because our success in it will go a long way in developing the sport.

“We’ve been in camp since Jan. 22 and it is meant to be a month training before we leave for Sri Lanka,” he said.

The WCL Division 5 begins on March 4th through to the 14th in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

He stressed that the training tour was to acclimatise the squad with the environment, which has a similar weather as Malaysia.

“In Sri Lanka, the team will play many friendly matches to test their skills ahead of the competition,” Ukpong added.

The Nigerian National Cricket team gained promotion to the International Cricket Council (ICC) WCL Division 5 after claiming the runners-up position at the WCL Division 6 league.

They could face challenges from cayman Islands, Malaysia , Tanzania, Guernsey and Jersey, who clinched the WCL Division 6 title in July.
