Villareal Fined €12,000 for Fans’ Act of Racism

The Spanish league disciplinary committee has fined Villareal the sum of 12,000 euros for racism by a fan who threw a banana at Barcelona’s Dani Alves during the league match between the teams at Villareal’s Madrigal stadium on 27 April.

The incident happened during Barca’s 3-2 win over the ‘Yellow Submarine’ last month.

The Brazilian left-back was preparing to take a corner when the fruit landed on the pitch beside him. He picked it up, bit it and threw away the left-over, as a sign to undermine racists taunting of black footballers with Banana.

The man detained has been identified as a 26-year-old Villareal supporter.

Villareal earlier said the man involved had had his season ticket withdrawn and been given a lifetime ban.
