Obafemi Martins rounded off scoring for Seattle Sounders in their 3-1 extra-time triumph over Philadelphia Union in the US Open Cup on Tuesday.
Maurice Edu opened scoring for Union in the 38th minute, when he headed home a Cristian Maidana’s free-kick, but Chadd Barrett drew level with a header of his own in the 47th minute.
Both teams failed to claim contest in regulation time, despite some purposeful attack from the Philadelphia side.
But with four minutes left to first-half extra-time break, Clint Dempsey’s left-footed shot found the back of the net following and assists from Martins.
The Nigerian striker then outran defender Ray Gaddis to complete scoring, as coach Sigi Schmid’s side won a fourth US Open Cup to add to their successive victories from 2009 to 2011.
