Borno: Soldier, 100 Others Killed In Boko Haram Attacks

Attacks by the Boko Haram sect continued on Tuesday, as gunmen ambushed troops of the Nigeria army on the Maiduguri-Biu highway, killing one soldier, according to Premium times which cited security sources.

100 persons were also reported killed in attacks on Borno villages.

The gunmen were said to have laid ambush at a spot not far from Damboa, before opening fire on the soldiers who were caught unawares.

“Our troops were on their way to Damboa this morning when the insurgents ambushed them. We lost one soldier,” the source said.

Reports also say that the insurgents unleashed fresh attacks on Pelachiroma and Kukurpu villages of Hawul Local Government Area, killing unspecified number of people.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mallam Madu Musa, who spoke to the Nigeria Tribune, said over 100 people had been killed in attacks that have happened after the federal government announced a ceasefire deal with the sect.

Musa said the frequency of attacks after the announcement show that the deal was unreal.

“The attack on Pelachiroma was very unfortunate; it is sad. We are pained by what is happening in Nigeria, despite the ceasefire agreement and this further confirms our fears that the Boko Haram cannot be trusted over any agreement.

“These people are only deceiving government to buy time and regroup. Our people are now fleeing their homes.

“If you go to Pelachiroma now, going by reports we received, our people are fleeing to Garkida. I was told that one person was confirmed dead in Pelachiroma and in Kukurpu, but we have no record of casualties yet,” he said.

He added: “If over 100 people had been killed, then whoever is talking about ceasefire agreement should have a rethink, unless there is a deliberate plan to kill all the people in the state.”
