Omawumi Megbele is a vivacious singer, songwriter and actress prominent in Nigeria’s music scene. She is known by many simply as Omawumi. She rose to stardom in 2007 after becoming a runner-up on West African Idols, a reality TV show part of the global Idols franchise. Her sophomore album, The Lasso of Truth, was said to be quite a commercial success in Nigeria

 EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATIONOmawumi was born on the 13th of April, 1982 in Delta State to Chief Dr. Frank and Mrs. Aya Megbele. For her primary education, she attended Nana Primary School in Warri and after that she attended the College of Education Demonstration Secondary School. After completing her secondary education, she proceeded to the Ambrose Alli University from which she graduated with a Law degree in 2005. After the completion of her tertiary education, Omawunmi moved to Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where she promptly began working in her dad’s law firm called “O.S Megbele & Associates”. While doing this, she also spent some time studying French at Alliance Francaise.

Omawumi’s big break came when she was a contestant on Idols West Africa. She emerged the 1st runner-up of the competition which held in 2007. She was loved by many because of her vocal prowess and captivating personality. Since the completion of the show, she has gone on to have countless other breath-taking performances along-side local music industry giants including P-Square, 2face Idibia, D’Banj, Banky W, M.I, Sasha, 9ice, and international superstars like Chaka Demus and Pliers, Carl Thomas, Angie Stone and Donell Jones.

Omawunmi got down to music proper when she dropped her first single called ‘In The Music’ in 2008. Her first album was released in 2009 and it was titled Wonder Woman. It had hit songs like Ma Fi Mi Shere in which she featured Eldee The Don, Chocolata featuring Naeto C and Today Na Today. Her second album, Lasso Of Truth, which was released in 2014 has also been well received by her numerous fans across the globe.

DELVING INTO ACTING

Omawumi has proven that she is not only a talented musician, she can also act as well. She starred in the 2009 edition of the V-Monolugues, a play that lent a voice to the plight of Nigerian woman touching on the negative issues affecting women in Nigeria. She also featured in the musical play Olurombi. She appeared briefly in the movie Inale, a movie produced by Bongos Ikwe which featured top acts like Hakeem Kae Kazeem, Dede Mabiaku, and Ini Edo. Omawunmi also she starred in Funke Akindele’s Return of Jenifa. She appeared in Yvonne Nelson’s House of Gold in 2013 alongside Ghanaian actor, Majid Michel and Nigerian chart-topping artiste, Ice Prince.

HUMANITARIAN WORKS, AWARDS AND ENDORSEMENTS

Omawunmi has been involved in a few non-governmental organisations like Project Alert Pink Pearl Foundation and projects like Notes2notes, and Maga No Need Pay which tried to intimate Nigerian youths on the need to stop involvement in cybercrimes and fraud.At the 2009 Hip Hop World Awards, Omawunmi went home with the highly coveted award for Next Rated Artist. She gave a heart rending thank you to her fans on stage after winning the award which car with a brand new car as a prize. She was awarded Best Rnb/Pop Artiste in 2010 at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards which held in New York. She also won the award for Best Female Music Video at the same awards. She has won Outstanding Recording Artisteat the Icon Awards and Best New Artiste at the Women in Entertainment and Arts Programme by Vivacity PR, London.

She is currently a brand ambassador for top brands Globacom, Malta Guinness and Konga.com. She is also a member of the campaign called “Rise with the Energy of Africa”.
