Second seed Roger Federer advanced into the fourth round of the French Open for an 11th straight year with a straight sets win over Damir Dzumhur on Friday.
Home favorite Richard Gasquet grounded out victory after going the distance with Argentina’s Carlos Berlocq, as Russia Tehmuraz Gabashvili advanced into the round of 16 yet to drop a set following victory over Lukas Rosol.
2009 champion Federer smashed 38 winners and had 75% break point conversion in ending Dzumhur’s journey to the round of 32 of the French Open, 6-4 6-3 6-2 in one hour 28 minutes at the Philippe-Chatrier.
The world No. 2 must have envisaged a youthful resilience in Dzumhur, who had eliminated Marcos Baghdatis and Mikail Youzhny en route to the last 32 and despite breaking the 23-year-old in the fifth game of the opening set and consolidating for a 4-2 lead; the 17-time Grand Slam winner needed a second opening to take the set 6-4 on his own serve.
The 33-year-old turned his game up a notch in the second set, breaking his opponent’s serves three times to claim a two-set to love lead, at whose point the world No. 88’s hopes of becoming the first Bosnian to reach the last 16 of a Grand Slam started becoming a mirage.
Federer broke twice more in the third set to record his 64th match win at the Roland Garros and set up a fourth round clash with either Gael Monfils or Pablo Cuevas.
Fellow Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka advanced into the last 16 of the French Open for a 5th time following a similar 6-4 6-3 6-2 win over America’s Steve Johnson later on Friday.
The eighth seed will face Gilles Simon in the fourth round. 12th seed Simons defeated fellow Frenchman Nicolas Mahut 6-2 6-7(8-6) 6-7(8-6) 6-3 6-1 at the Suzanne-Lenglen.
Gasquet saw of Berlocq 3-6 6-3 6-1 4-6 6-1 in a match that was interrupted during the decider due to darkness earlier at the Suzanne-Lenglen.
Gabashvili sailed past Rosol 6-4 6-4 6-4 and will face Japan’s fifth seed Kei Nishikori in the round of 16.
