On this day in 1997, General Oladipo Diya, Chief of General Staff, narrowly escapes a bomb explosion at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja..

Between January 1984 to August 1985, Diya was the Military Governor of Ogun State and was also Vice President as Chief of general Staff during Gen Sani Abacha’s military regime.

Diya had allegedly planned to overthrow the Abacha regime but was arrested and jailed alongside his cohorts in 1997 for treason.

He was later sentenced to death by firing squad in 1998 by a military tribunal sitting in Jos.
