Six people have lost their lives in an accident involving a petrol tanker and a tricycle at Obong Itam, Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

The petrol tanker which was reported to have been coming from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Depot in Calabar, crashed into a pavement on the highway after trying to escape a police team who tried to flagged it down after noticing the vehicle had only one headlamp.

The driver was said to have lost control while speeding, and crashed into the pavement trapping a tricycle in the process and burst into flames.

The driver, his conductor, and two passengers in the tricycle were reported to have died instantly, and burnt beyond recognition.

The tricycle rider and another man in the truck died in hospital.

The incident was later confirmed by the Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr. Godsgift Uwen.
