Tragedy struck in Lagos Sunday morning when a fully loaded petrol tanker fell on a Hyundai car at Ikorodu roundabout, crushing the car’s lone occupant to death.
National Mirror gathered that the Mack Truck with registration number AGL 664 XG, laden with 33,000 litres of premium motor spirit, belonging to Forte Oil, lost control at the roundabout due to overspending.
Eyewitnesses said while the truck was negotiating the roundabout, it fell on the Hyundai saloon car with registration number KJA 421 AH, trapping and killing the yet-to-be identified lone person in the car.
Prompt response from a combined team of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Lagos State Fire Service, men of the Nigeria Police Force, LASTMA, Civil Defense, FRSC and other security operatives prevented the incident from becoming a major disaster as a result of fuel spillage.
Confirming the incident, LASEMA general manager Mr. Adesina Tiamiyu, said the agency received the incident’s distress alert through the Lagos State toll free emergency number 767/112 at about 4:08am yesterday.
He said the agency, on getting to the scene, helped in lifting the fallen truck upright, addingthat the agency also extricated the body of the
victim.
Tiamiyu said: “The dead body was recovered and taken to the Ikorodu General Hospital mortuary by LASEMA ERT, FRSC and the Nigerian Police Force from Ikorodu Division. The vehicles involved in the accident were equally cleared off the road and handed over to the police.”
The LASEMA boss hinted that detailed investigation would still be carried out on the cause of the accident by the relevant government agencies, even as he advised motorists, especially articulated truck drivers, to avoid over speeding and also adhere to all traffic rules and regulation to avoid unwarranted loss of lives and property.
