Kidnapped 10 month-old baby sold for N650,000

The police in Imo State on Thursday handed over a ten months old boy, Tochukwu Okechukwu Peter, who was stolen and sold for N650,000, to his parents, Mr and Mrs Okechukwu Peter.

This is coming four days after the command paraded five women for stealing a baby at a burial ceremony in the state and selling him for N600,000 to a buyer in Nnewi, Anambra State.

Parading the three suspects before newsmen, Ogechi Chukwuocha, 42 years, Calista Igwe, 38, and Chimezie, 32 before handing over the recovered child to his parents, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Andrew Enwerem, said that the child was stolen from his mother, Udoka Peter, on June 15, 2017, at Ogbaku in the Mbaitoli Local Government Area of the state.

The Police spokesperson asserted that while the prime suspect, One Favor Nwekem, who allegedly stole the baby from the baby’s mother, was still at large, the operatives of the state Department of Criminal Investigations and Intelligence bust the syndicate’s den in Orlu on June 20 and recovered the child, unhurt.

Enwerem said “On June 15, one Udoka Peter, reported the case of the stealing of her ten months old son by one Favour Nwekem. The operatives of Department of Criminal Investigations and Intelligence swung into action. On June 20, we raided their hideout in Orlu and recovered the stolen boy.

Investigation revealed that one Ogechi Chukwuocha bought the child for N650,000, from Calista Igwe, while Chimezie Okafor was the link person. Unfortunately, the prime suspect ran away, but we are trailing him and will soon nab him”.

When interviewed, the alleged buyer of the child, Chukwuocha, who confessed to the crime, said that she paid N650,000 for the boy.

The widow who stated that she needed a male child desperately, said she did not know the child was stolen. She said her buyer promised to give her cover up documents before the police rounded them up.

One of the suspects, Igwe, confessed that she got N27,000 from the deal.

The father of the recovered child who hailed from Afikpo South Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Peter, who expressed delight to God, said that stealing of his son brought untold trauma to his household, especially to his 35-year-old wife, Udoka.
