Just in: Gbenga Daniel backtracks on joining APC

The former governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, who resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party, has rescinded his decision of leading his supporters to the ruling All Progressives Congress after initially agreeing to do so.

Daniel had sent a letter to the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Uche Secondus on Saturday, signalling his resignation from the party to focus on other vocations.

But, on Sunday, while addressing his supporters at his Asoludero residence in Sagamu on his reasons for quitting politics, Daniel agreed to lead them to the ruling APC in the state.

His supporters had rejected his planned retirement, saying the former governor must lead them to the ruling party, having worked for the victory of the governor-elect in the state, Dapo Abiodun.

When approached by newsmen, Daniel said:

Basically, they (the supporters) said I could resign from PDP. They said I must lead them to APC.

And they also said I cannot retire from politics. That is the summary of what I heard. Now we have to take a look at it. What else can I say? My people have spoken.

However, after hours of meeting with his supporters on Sunday, Gbenga Daniel last night denied agreeing to join the APC.

But he said he had only freed his supporters to join either the PDP or the APC.
