One down, more to go - Presidency reacts to Onnoghen's conviction

President Muhammadu Buhari’s aide on social media, Lauretta Onochie has reacted to the conviction and ban of embattled Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Walter Onnoghen.

The Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) on Thursday convicted Justice Onmoghen and banned him from holding any public office in the country for the next 10 years.

The CCT Chairman, Danladi Umar said that Onnoghen was being charged as an ordinary public office holder and not as a judicial officer.

Speaking further during the Thursday’s proceedings, Umar said that the Tribunal had jurisdiction to try Justice Onnoghen and that his prosecution was competent without regards to Section 158 Subsection 1.

Justice Onnoghen was thereafter convicted and removed from office as the CJN and Chairman of the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).

Apart from being banned from holding public office for the next 10 years, he was ordered to forfeit all five accounts that he failed to declare by him between 2009 and 2015.

Justice Onnoghen was found to have breached the Code of Conduct for public officers.

Onochie in her reaction wrote: Onnoghen convicted. Banned from holding Public office for TEN Years.

One down, Many to go, she said.
