How We Saved Obasanjo From Impeachment: Yakubu Gowon

A former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, on  Saturday, recounted how he, and General Abdulsalami Abubakar, ex-President Ernest Shonekon, and other eminent Nigerians saved former president Olusegun Obasanjo from being impeached as president by the National Assembly.

Gowon said he had to talk to the Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Ghali Na’Abbah and the Senate President, Pius Anyim, to allow Obasanjo to complete his tenure.

Gowon said this while speaking during a lecture at the Major General Emmanuel Olumuyiwa Abisoye Foundation.

In the lecture which was tagged:” Nation Building or Nation Fragmentation: Reflections on 20 Years of Post-Military Rule in Nigeria”, where he serves as its Chairman, Board of Trustees, the former military head said he did it to preserve the seat of the president.

He noted also that it was done so that Obasanjo’s successors would face such embarrassments from the legislature in the future.

He stated further that the legislature had planned to embarrass Obasanjo and that had to be averted to save future presidents from such fate.

Na’Abbah was also a guest at the event and Gowon expressed his gratitude for listening to them, and not going ahead with their decision to send Obasanjo packing out of Aso Rock through impeachment.
