Luis Figo has backed the idea of a live Fifa presidential debate between candidates ahead of the 29 May congress in Zurich
The former Portugal winger is looking to unseat Sepp Blatter, who is seeking for a fifth tenure as Fifa President. He is joined in the race by Dutch football president, Michael van Praag and Fifa vice-president for Asia Prince Ali bin Al-Hussein.
All four candidates have been invited to participate in a televised debate, with English FA chairman, Greg Dyke, offering to anchor it at Wembley Stadium.
“Football is loved and cherished around the world and we owe it to the fans to have an open, honest discussion about the future of Fifa as the international governing body,” the 2001 Fifa World Player of the Year tweeted about the idea, originally proposed by the BBC and Sky.
“I fully support the idea of a public debate between the candidates… For this to work effectively, I believe all four candidates need to participate and I will be writing to the broadcasters to confirm that position.
“It is essential that we set Fifa on a new course and the football community, including the public and the fans, deserve to know what all four presidential candidates offer for the future.”
