Kwara state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has warned the state government against diverting the federal government’s bailout meant to offset all the outstanding salaries and allowances of workers and pensioners in the state.

According to Thisday, the warning might not be unconnected with fears in certain quarters over the alleged plan by some state governments  to divert the bailout fund to pay some contractors instead of paying the salaries and allowances.

In a letter to Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed dated July 7, 2015 and signed by the state chairman of the NLC, Yekini Agunbiade, the union urged the state government to endeavour to offset the unpaid salaries to workers and pensioners in the state so as to give them a new lease of life.

The NLC called on the governor to particularly use the money to offset June salaries to workers, pensioners, parastatals and agencies in the state, and also to settle several months of outstanding salaries of local government employees, local government pensioners and all outstanding salaries of workers in the state universal basic education board (SUBEB), especially the teaching and non-teaching staff, including all the government tertiary institutions in the state.
