Kano Residents Groan Under Harsh Security Conditions

Kwankwanso_28-04-11KANO residents, after the bloody Boko Haram serial attacks in the city last two weeks, have been facing harsh security measures occasioned by the presence of security operatives in the metropolis It has not been easy for residents of the metropolis since security

authorities adopted stringent measures aimed at averting a re-occurrence of the deadly attack by members of the dreaded group penultimate week.

The 6 pm to 6 am curfew imposed by the state government is still in force, just as business activities in the metropolis have  been at the lowest ebb since the Boko Haram attacks rendered the thriving commercial city a frightful zone.

Worse affected is the Sabongari axis of the metropolis, which is now a shadow of its old self, as it is devoid of the rich blend of all sorts of people that usually trooped to the area to actualise their social and economic goals.

The absence of visitors from various parts of the country and abroad have also crippled commercial activities in key markets, such as Kantin Kwari, Kurmi, Hajj Camp, Dawanau and Sabongari.

Residents, particularly those commuting to various destinations from within and outside the metropolis, now go through harrowing experience due to multiple checkpoints across the city.

Passengers on commercial motorcyclists, popularly known as Okada, are forced to trek about 100 metres distance to any of the checkpoint manned by a combined team of heavily armed soldiers and policemen.

However, amidst the  tight security , Muslims yesterday offered the weekly Juma’at prayer session in various part of the Kano metropolis.

Police and military surveillance helicopters hovered around the Juma’at mosques spread across the metropolis.

At the Al- Furqan mosque, stern looking mobile policemen searched vehicle boots and ordered those with handbags to unveil their contents to ensure there were no harmful items in them.

In line with the directives of the Kano State government and the Emir of Kano, Dr. Ado Bayero, for divine intervention over the recent security challenges in Kano, special prayers were offered at the mosques aimed at ensuring peace and tranquility in Kano and Nigeria as a whole.
