Sir Victor Olaiya reaches 60 years on stage

When you hear the evergreen tunes of Nigerian musicians you cannot write off the prints of the legends whose immense contributions are now being enjoyed by young musicians! No wasteful eulogy can be attributed to “Big daddies” like Victor Olaiya, Victor Uwaifo among numerous others.

The musical evolution of Dr Olaiya, who was born on December 31, 1930, dates back to his early days in Calabar, the Cross River State capital. However, his prowess in the woodwind instruments gave him unprecedented advantages in doing what he knows how to do best.

“omo pupa”, “omo lanke”, “so fun mi”, among others golden moments! His linguistic skills were perfect too. Sir victor made rhythm flowed like a radiant stream.

In commemoration of his 60 years on stage, Sir (Dr) Victor Olaiya will be on the bandstand on September 16 during a concert at the Banquet Hall of Lagos City Hall. I’m greatly indebted to this great Nigerian icon whose unrelenting efforts showed the youth viable advantages of the rich Nigerian culture.

Bravo the legendary Sir Victor Olaiya! Long live the woodwind maestro. . . Godspeed!
